WILLIAM FLETCHER 1969 HOME
A rare treat to work on such an architecturally significant home, designed by William Fletcher, one of Portland’s most influential midcentury modern architects. The residence was full of custom details and curiosities, including original 1969 Heath tile throughout, and the homeowners agreed that it was important to preserve as much of these original details and finishes and possible. Perfectly laid out on a single level, we didn’t need to move any internal walls or alter the spaces much, rather update failing materials and bring in style that elevates the existing treasures.

Keeping true to the original style, we added some new Heath tile, as well as augmenting with Ann Sacks to elevate the spaces with fun textures, patterns and colors.
While keeping the original footprint in this narrow bathroom we converted a tub into a shower that was a better fit for the family using it. The floor was original 1960’s Heath tile which we didn’t want to disturb, but were able to refresh other parts of the room.
Outside, we updated the traditionally formal landscaping into what I call a “California casual” style. Using different shades of green offset the house with sculptural moments, and the evergreen drooping cedar and golden leaves of the gingko tree stand out against the wooded setting. In the play area and patio, softer ornamental plants such as black mondo grass and lime-green asparagus fern provide minimal but lush contrast.
